Bill 2 is an unprecedented attack on all unionized workers in Alberta
| On behalf of TUCFA President, Dr. Francine G. Smith, Ph.D. The University of Calgary Faculty Association (TUCFA) sends a message of support and solidarity to the members of the Alberta Teachers’ Association (ATA). ATA members have been on strike for over three weeks to improve their wages, their working conditions, and students’ learning conditions. Yesterday, teachers learned of a new unprecedented attack on their constitutionally protected right to strike. The Government of Alberta’s decision to table Bill 2 – the Back to School Act – will force teachers to end their strike and accept a legislated contract. Alberta’s K-12 teachers deserve better. The right to strike is critical to meaningful and respectful collective bargaining and is protected by the Canadian Charter of Rights and Freedoms. Ultimately, by legislating instead of negotiating, Bill 2 is an unprecedented attack on all unionized workers in our province. TUCFA has signed on to the Common Front Solidarity Pact. If you would like to receive updates from the Common Front and the Alberta Federation of Labour, text RESIST to 55255. You will then be sent a link to receive updates on upcoming rallies and events. TUCFA understands that taking away Alberta’s teachers’ collective bargaining rights has grave implications for all other unions in the province. |
