Holiday closure

Academic staff are not required to work on December 23, 2016.

As per the Collective Agreement, Schedule A, Article 2.15, academic staff are entitled to paid holidays including Christmas Day, Boxing Day, New Year’s Day and three (3) designated work days between Christmas Day and New Year’s Day. Because statutory holidays fall on the weekend this year, there is also a requirement to have a corresponding weekday off in lieu of these days.

Academic staff may have noticed that the original schedule put forward by the administration did not include enough days off to accommodate the various paid holidays outlined above. The Faculty Association initiated a grievance on the matter as an informal solution was not possible. The Faculty Association believes (and precedent would indicate) that academic staff are entitled to all of the paid holidays as per the Collective Agreement.

The grievance was resolved and academic staff do not have to work December 23, 2016. There may be some instances where an academic staff member may have to work this day as required by their Department Head or equivalent, however they are entitled to a mutually agreed day in lieu on a different date.
