The CAUT Defence Fund is the national strike fund that the Faculty Association belongs to in addition to our local strike fund. The Defence Fund, which has a minimum target of $35 million, plays a major role in supporting Faculty Associations when they strike or are locked out. It is essential to maintain a sustainable Defence Fund, especially given several recent strikes and growing labour unrest across Canada. In October, the Directors of the Defence Fund moved to increase the baseline dues to $7.00 per month effective December 1, 2023. In addition, there is a Defence Fund policy to trigger an additional temporary dues increase when the fund declines below $33 million for two consecutive quarters. Given this, effective December 1, 2023, Defence Fund dues will be $8.00 per month and until the Fund is at $35,000,000 for two consecutive quarters, at which time they will revert to the baseline (currently $7.00).
